100 acres in Southeast Illinois, Crawford County, designed to hold big whitetail. Land has been exclusively hunted with bow since 1994. Since that time, various food plots have been planted and intensively managed. Twenty-foot strips of clover that all wildlife enjoy can be found throughout the property.
It has a variety of cover types including white pine plantings, bushes such as red dogwood, silky dogwood, gray dogwood, and hazelnut to name a few. All oak species that are native to Illinois are planted throughout the property as well as stands of warm season grasses, fruit trees, persimmon trees and chestnuts.
In 1994 l started working with Kevin Woods a wildlife Biologist. We created a plan for the whole property. His angle was for wildlife as a whole and mine was to hold big whitetail. We made a great team. That plan has changed some throughout the years. But the focus has remained the same. And that is to make it the very best it can be.It don’t just hold big whitetail, all wildlife flourishes there.
1. Some of the things we have done included square block plantings of pine trees. Which was used for windbreaks.
2.Red cedar planting for windbreaks. All kinds of birds love to call home.
3. White pine and bushes planted together. That works great! I love the habitat that creaties. We also planted a few fruit trees in that, with persimmon trees around the outside.
4. We planted American chestnut
5. We have planted fruit trees
6. We have planted Oak trees throughout the property.
7. We have planted acres of warm season grasses. Deer love it.
We started with bare rooted trees and did not like our success ratio. We went to potted trees and done a lot better.
8. We have planted Imperial whitetail clover throughout the property. That is a food source that is there all year.It is great not only for whitetail but for young turkey and quail,it is loaded with insects throughout the summer. I call it the meat and potatoes.
9. We have two food plots we plant beans in every year. That give the wildlife the protein they need in late winter.
10. We have went through the wooded part of the property with a chainsaw and have riddled, cut down or hinge cut the undesirable trees. Just whatever the location called for. That makes some real thick cover which big bucks love. I started that back in 1995. We were thinking that we would let the woods regenerate itself. That was a mistake . All we had coming back was soft maple and cottonwood. So we went back in with a chainsaw. Cut that stuff down and planted oak trees and walnuts.
11. The property had a old pond on it with a broken dam. We fixed the dam and that has been a great magnet for wildlife.
12. The property also has a natural spring on it. The deer love it when it gets dry.
13. We have built habitat around our stand sites. To bring everything together at that spot.
14. Working with this property that I have been blessed with. l was named landowner of year in Illinois Region V in 2007. And also conversationalist of the year 2013 in Crawford County.
15.This property has been great for me and my family. I have memories for a lifetime.
